KC HELP Benefit at Kingston Youth Sports Association) Golf Tournament
Grand Knight Mark Maruda is planning a fundraiser for KC HELP where we have been given a tee box sponsorship at the upcoming 2nd Annual KYSA (Kingston Youth Sports Association) Golf Tournament, happening on Saturday, August 16th at White Horse Golf Club. You can learn more about the event at www.kysagolf.com.
Some might know that his daughter and son-in-law serve on the KYSA Board of Directors, so this tournament is especially meaningful to him— it’s a great opportunity for us to support local youth sports and introduce the community to the work we do at KC Help.
Our plan is to greet each team at our sponsored hole with a short description of KC Help’s mission. We’ll offer bottled water and a flyer, and plan to have a few mobility aid props on display — such as a wheelchair, walker, or possibly a power chair — along with a KC Help banner. We are open to ideas!
If you would like to help out at our sponsored hole, please contact GK Mark Maruda at 360-434-7729. We would really appreciate your help and support!
Kitsap County Fair Fundraiser Opportunity
Our Council has been approached to provide staffing at the Kitsap County Fair on Wednesday, August 20 through Sunday, August 24) for the 10-2 and 2-7 shifts parking cars. Volunteers can work one or both shifts. Additionally, on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (and perhaps Saturday and Sunday) selling Fair tickets from 3:30 to 10.
This is a great fundraising opportunity so to be successful, we will need your support. Please stay tuneds as more details come available in terms of specifice days and time slots where help will be needed.
St. Olaf’s Work Party
Under Grand Knight Mark Maruda’s leadership, the work party on Tuesday, July 15th went very well. It was a busy few hours cleaning and tossing old papers and items stored for many years. Thanks to those who were able to make it and get this effort completed.
On a sad note, we just learned that the parish house at St. Peter’s had been broken into and left in quite disarray. We will likely call another work party to clean it up in the coming days.
Ministry Fair & Ice Cream Social
Thank you to the many members and their families who joined us on Saturday, July 26th, for our St Olaf’s Ministry Fair & Ice Cream Social. The day was filled with friendship and lively conversation. Many thanks for the crew providing information and support for the Knights.
Star Council
We received official notice of our 4-Star Council award this month. We should be seeing the plaque in the coming weeks. Congratulations to all who made this possible, especially our new members who have stepped in and are really making a difference.
Thank you, Coffee and Donuts!
Serving our parishioners every Sunday are three of our brother knights, Jim Hopper, Alan Amesen and Mark Maruda. Jim and Alan, make sure the donuts & coffee social times go smoothly without a glitch! They provide regular coffee, condiments, decaf coffee, set up and clean up — they get these and other details done every Sunday. Jim handles the 8 AM Mass and Alan the 10:30 AM Mass. Mark Maruda also steps in to help with the transition between the two masses and checks on everything. Well done and our continued thanks. Anyone who would like to step in and perhaps serve in a backup role in the event our regulars are not able to be there.
Membership News
Please extend a warm welcome to our Council’s newest Brother Knights, who started our new fraternal year off with a bang! We are already at 67% of our membership goal because of their desire to be part of what we do and to avail themselves of our fraternal benefits:

Virtus Training through the Archdiocese of Seattle
Our Knights of Columbus Council 8297 at St. Olaf’s who are either being or likely to be a volunteer for Knights of Columbus activities in and around St. Olaf’s or St. Cecilia’s, that might involve vulnerable children or adults, necessitates that you get a background check and complete Virtus training through the Archdiocese of Seattle. So, with that, please create an account at https://virtusonline.org/virtus/ and go through the process of obtaining the certifications. This is in addition to any SAFE training and certifications through Knights of Columbus via Praesidium. They are two separate but similar programs that do not interface with one another so we have to do both. Thanks for attending to this as soon as you can so that we can remain compliant with Archdiocesan requirements.
KC HELP
Our Brother Knight volunteers work tirelessly every day to assist people in need of specialized equipment as they deal with the physical effects of aging or recovery from surgeries or accidents. It’s difficult to adequately express the immense gratitude that we see day in and day out and to imagine how these people might have dealt with their difficult circumstances had KC HELP not been available to assist them. If this is something you would like to be involved in, please contact us at 360-981-3179 to join our other Brother Knights in this essential work. In fact, we will likely be calling for a work party to help get caught up on a mass influx equipment that has overwhelmed our regulars. Stay tuned for for more details.
In the last 12 Months KC HELP has provided 4,975 items to 2,655 people totaling $1,480,905 in value, $1,905,901 when including hours and mileage.
Inception to date, KC HELP has provided 14,300 items to 7,664 people totaling $4,287,250 in value, $4,918,961 when including hours and mileage. We’ll likely exceed $5.0 million this month!
Our Council has been an exceptional supporter of KC HELP, not only through the volunteer work of several of our members, but through financial support. The Council recently donated $3,000 and our Assembly 2433 donated $1,000 toward the KC HELP Capital Campaign to acquire the new building at 939 North Callow in Bremerton that we closed on May 16th. Thanks to everyone who made this possible! Now, the real work begins to pay off the remaining debt!
We had a great team effort in our participation in the Bainbridge Island 4th of July Parade.
